The most enchanting story of Christmas returns to fall in love with the public of all ages.

Keeping the tradition and spirit of classical ballet, this sumptuous production of the Ukrainian Classical Ballet captures all the beauty and drama of authentic romantic ballet, an all-time classic that appeals to all generations.

In each presentation, the main motivation of the Ukrainian Classical Ballet is to take care of the traditions and essence of the purest classical ballet, making them a feast for the senses with the charm of their costumes and the showiness of their decorations; generating a fascinating balance with the perfection of their lines and the sobriety of their choreographies.

This emerging company based in the city of Kharkov, a true benchmark of this genre, is responsible for bringing to the stage masterpieces such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, etc.

It's Christmas Eve. At her parents’ party, Clara is thrilled when her godfather, the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer, gives her a nutcracker doll dressed as a soldier; he even repairs it by magic when her brother breaks it in a fit of jealousy. Later that night, when everyone is asleep, Clara sneaks downstairs to look for her doll, only to find that the Christmas tree suddenly becomes enormous and all the toys come to life. Transformed by Drosselmeyer into a valiant warrior, the Nutcracker leads his toy soldiers in a fierce battle with the villainous Mouse King and his army, defeats them with Clara’s help, and immediately turns into a handsome prince. He whisks Clara away to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them to a brilliant display of colourful dances from across the world and a magnificent pas de deux that is one of the highlights of classical ballet – the perfect climax to a sparkling fantasy that entertains and delights everyone who sees it.

During its extensive career, the Ukrainian Classical Ballet has toured extensively and successfully on the best stages in Europe.

GREAT CHRISTMAS CONCERT

The Nutcracker / Symphony No. 5

PALAU DE LA MÚSICA CATALANA

Sunday, 18/12/2022 21:30

The world of childhood, magic and fantasy are combined in the first part of the program with the suite of The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, the excellent Christmas ballet. In this version for concert, which premiered and achieved fame even before the ballet itself, the romantic Waltz of the flowers, the vigorous Russian dance or the original sound of the celesta giving voice to the Sugar Plum Fairy are unforgettable.

The program of the concert is completed with Beethoven's Symphony No .5, a composition that is perfectly associated with the image we usually have of the musician, agitated, intense and dishevelled, and which best represents the greatness of music. The distinctive four notes that open the symphony and that are repeated throughout the work are surely the most popular notes of all music as they represent the fate knocking at the door.

Carmina Burana, Carl Orff's most famous work, celebrates life, love, dancing, drinking and hedonism - but always with an eye on the designs of fate. Based on 24 mediaeval Latin poems whose carefree spirit contrasts vividly with the traditional concepts of life and death in the Middle Ages, this sweeping and powerful cantata for large-scale chorus, orchestra and soloists was a huge success at its premiere in 1937. Its worldwide popularity since then has made it a firm favourite with among singers and audiences alike.

Classical music may be popular.

The evidence is this concert, which brings together the great operas converted into true popular hymns.

Verdi gave voice to the people and made them protagonists: from the Triumphal March of Aida, when the troops return victoriously from the battle, or the chorus of gypsies from Il Trovatore, who sing their joyness, until the Va Pensiero from Nabucco, the song of the oppressed Jewish slaves, became a symbol of unified Italy under the Habsburgs, universal anthem of the freedom of the people.

The program also includes fragments and pieces from other major opera titles such as Don Giovanni and La Traviata with their lavish toast.
