SWAN LAKE, Tchaikovsky - Petipa

Royal Russian Ballet

CCIB del Fòrum

Wednesday, 29/12/2021 20:00

A romantic setting, magnificent choreography and an unforgettable fairy-tale story of doomed love combine to make Swan Lake the ultimate classical ballet, acclaimed by audiences worldwide. At a secluded lake near the royal palace, Prince Siegfried discovers Odette, a beautiful girl transformed into a swan by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. The spell can only be broken when a man pledges his eternal love and Siegfried, instantly enraptured vows to release Odette from her captivity. However, at the prince’s birthday ball, Von Rothbart tricks Siegfried into swearing his love for the sorcerer’s daughter Odile, disguised as the mirror-image of Odette. Too late, the prince sees a vision of his real beloved; though he rushes to find Odette by the lakeside, he knows that only the lovers’ death can lift the curse and unite them for all time.

The virtuous double role of Odette/Odile, Tchaikovsky’s powerful score and one of the greatest pas de deux in the whole ballet repertoire all unite to make Swan Lake an unmissable experience.

With over 30 dancers on stage, this sumptuous production by the Royal Russian Ballet captures all the beauty and drama of the ultimate romantic ballet, a timeless classic that appeals to any generation.

With its enchanting story and some of Tchaikovsky’s best-loved music, including the Waltz of the Flowers and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, The Nutcracker has captivated audiences of all ages for well over 100 years.

It's Christmas Eve. At her parents’ party, Clara is thrilled when her godfather, the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer, gives her a nutcracker doll dressed as a soldier; he even repairs it by magic when her brother breaks it in a fit of jealousy. Later that night, when everyone is asleep, Clara sneaks downstairs to look for her doll, only to find that the Christmas tree suddenly becomes enormous and all the toys come to life. Transformed by Drosselmeyer into a valiant warrior, the Nutcracker leads his toy soldiers in a fierce battle with the villainous Mouse King and his army, defeats them with Clara’s help, and immediately turns into a handsome prince. He whisks Clara away to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them to a brilliant display of colourful dances from across the world and a magnificent pas de deux that is one of the highlights of classical ballet – the perfect climax to a sparkling fantasy that entertains and delights everyone who sees it.

With over 30 dancers on stage, this sumptuous production by the Royal Russian Ballet captures all the beauty and drama of the ultimate romantic ballet, a timeless classic that appeals to any generation.

GREAT CHRISTMAS CONCERT

THE NUTCRACKER (suite), SYMPHONY No. 5

PALAU DE LA MÚSICA CATALANA

Tuesday, 4/01/2022 18:00

The world of childhood, magic and fantasy are combined in the first part of the program with the suite of The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, the excellent Christmas ballet. In this version for concert, which premiered and achieved fame even before the ballet itself, the romantic Waltz of the flowers, the vigorous Russian dance or the original sound of the celesta giving voice to the Sugar Plum Fairy are unforgettable.

The program of the concert is completed with Beethoven's Symphony No .5, a composition that is perfectly associated with the image we usually have of the musician, agitated, intense and dishevelled, and which best represents the greatness of music. The distinctive four notes that open the symphony and that are repeated throughout the work are surely the most popular notes of all music as they represent the fate knocking at the door.

The Great Spanish Guitar Night leads you into the heart of Iberia. In music inspired by tradition and suffused with lyrical melody, the lustrous tone and rhythmic energy of the guitar capture the sounds and sensuality of Spain in a way that no other instrument can.

At the heart of the programme is one of the world’s most popular concertos: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, a creative fusion of folksong influences and imaginative orchestration. The concerto is the signature work of renowned guitarist Rolando Saad, who has played it more than 900 times, to audiences totalling over two million, in major concert halls across Europe and with prestigious orchestras, including London’s Royal Philharmonic. Rolando Saad’s virtuoso performance captures both the work’s lyrical themes and its lively dance rhythms, conjuring visions of the gardens of Aranjuez and the warmth of the Andalucian sun.

With Bizet’s Carmen suite and De Falla’s El Amor Brujo completing the programme, this is a concert that invokes the spirit and colour of Spain through some of its most beguiling music.

The two great protagonists of this concert are the unforgettable John Williams and Hans Zimmer.

Music from some of Hollywood’s greatest films storms off the silver screen and on to the concert stage, in a program that will thrill not just moviegoers but anyone who loves music.

The heroics of Star Wars, the daring of Indiana Jones and the magic of Harry Potter inspired John Williams to create some of the best-loved film scores of all time. With blazing brass and soaring strings, this orchestral concert highlights the phenomenal composer whose music has defined movie-going for three generations, with themes from Superman, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Saving Private Ryan among dozens that have become classics themselves.

Since the 1980s, Zimmer has provided knock-out music for blockbusters including Gladiator, Inception, Sherlock Holmes, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight trilogy and multi-award winner The Lion King, as well as numerous other film and television projects. Adding slide guitars, out-of-tune pianos and ticking watches to synthesisers, samples and percussion, combining vocals with Romani tunes and shimmering strings, Hans Zimmer has created scintillating sound worlds that evoke eras from Ancient Rome to the far future.

Carmina Burana, Carl Orff's most famous work, celebrates life, love, dancing, drinking and hedonism - but always with an eye on the designs of fate. Based on 24 mediaeval Latin poems whose carefree spirit contrasts vividly with the traditional concepts of life and death in the Middle Ages, this sweeping and powerful cantata for large-scale chorus, orchestra and soloists was a huge success at its premiere in 1937. Its worldwide popularity since then has made it a firm favourite with among singers and audiences alike.

THE FOUR SEASONS, Vivaldi

BOLERO, Ravel

PALAU DE LA MÚSICA CATALANA

Wednesday, 12/01/2022 20:30

With this work, Vilvaldi wanted to capture in music the feelings that awoke in him the seasons of the year. The violins, string orchestra and the continuous bass are able to imitate the song of the birds, the characteristics of the shotgun, the barking of dogs, the murmuring of the water streams... It is an example of descriptive or programmatic music, very popular in the baroque period (although Vivaldi surpassed it), incorporating musical innovations and endowing it with a great freshness and expressive force.

Within the vast compositional production of Antonio Vivaldi, The Four Seasons is his most famous and widespread work. The four scores (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) are part of a set of twelve concertos for violin and orchestra released in Amsterdam in 1725.

In its premiere the work was enthusiastically received, although it was from the second half of the nineteenth century when these four pieces were included in innumerable concerts and record productions, and they crossed the limits of classical music to conquer the favor of all kinds of public.

Bolero is an authentic orchestral virtuosic exercise whose interest lies in the way Ravel combines the different instruments, from the subtle pianissimo at the beginning to a very strong ending.
